The Sobral Santos II Tragedy (1981)
Back in 1981, a ferry called Sobral Santos II sank in the Amazon River, near a town called Óbidos, in northern Brazil. The boat was coming from Santarém and heading to Manaus, packed way beyond its limit — there were over 500 people onboard.
In the middle of the night, while most passengers were sleeping, the boat tilted and sank really fast. It was chaos. The rescue was super difficult because it was dark, the current was strong, and there wasn’t enough safety equipment.
Sadly, more than 300 people died. Some survivors even said piranhas might’ve attacked people in the water, but no one knows for sure if that really happened. After the accident, there was a lot of talk about how unsafe those riverboats were — and how something had to change.
