The TAM Flight 3054 Crash (2007)
In July 2007, a plane from TAM Airlines, flight 3054, crashed while trying to land at Congonhas Airport, right in the middle of São Paulo. It was raining, the runway was wet, and to make things worse, one of the plane’s thrust reversers (which help slow it down) wasn’t working.
The plane couldn’t stop in time, slid off the runway, and crashed into a building and a gas station nearby. The impact caused a huge explosion, and tragically, all 187 people on board died, along with 12 people on the ground.
The accident shocked the whole country. People were angry because Congonhas was known for being a risky airport when it rained, and many said this disaster could’ve been avoided. After that, Brazil took a closer look at aviation safety and the way airports are managed.
