It happened on the morning of December 25, 2024. An Azerbaijan Airlines plane, an ordinary Embraer 190, was flying calmly from Baku to Grozny. But something went wrong - Chechnya was restless, drones were hanging in the sky, plus bad weather. The pilots decided not to take risks and went to an alternate airfield in Kazakhstan, in Aktau.
But they never made it to the airport.
About five kilometers from the runway, the plane crashed. There were 67 people on board. After hitting the ground, a fire started. The result was terrible: 38 people died, including the crew. The rest - about 29 people - were seriously injured, but survived.
At first they thought it was all about the fog and poor visibility. Then they talked about birds that could have gotten into the engines. But in February, the Kazakh authorities officially announced that traces of an external strike had been found on board. They started talking about a missile or some kind of military projectile.
Azerbaijan claims that their plane was hit by the Russian Pantsir-S air defense system. They allegedly confused it with something hostile against the backdrop of all the chaos that is happening in the region. Russia officially denies everything
This is not just an ordinary plane crash due to technology or weather. This is a story about how a civilian aircraft ended up in an area where someone decided to shoot at civilians.
