It was a clear spring morning on March 24, 2015, when Germanwings Flight 9525 took off from Barcelona, Spain, heading toward Düsseldorf, Germany. On board were 150 people: 144 passengers and 6 crew members. Most of them were Germans and Spaniards — among them were schoolchildren returning from an exchange program, couples, businesspeople, and families.
The plane, an Airbus A320, was flying normally at first. Everything seemed calm. But then, shortly after reaching cruising altitude, the aircraft suddenly began to descend — steadily, silently.
Air traffic controllers tried to make contact. No response. The plane kept descending. No mayday call. No explanation. Finally, at 10:41 a.m., it crashed into the French Alps, near the town of Prads-Haute-Bléone, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. There were no survivors. Rescue teams had to climb rugged mountain terrain to reach the debris, scattered across a steep, remote area. The scene was heartbreaking. At first, the cause of the crash was a mystery. But when investigators recovered the cockpit voice recorder, the truth shocked the world. The co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz, had locked the captain out of the cockpit. While alone at the controls, he deliberately programmed the descent. The captain desperately tried to get back in, banging on the door, but Lubitz remained silent. Breathing normally, he flew the plane straight into the mountains. It was not an accident. It was a murdersuicide. Investigations later revealed that Lubitz had a history of mental health issues, including depression. He had concealed this from his employer. His doctor had declared him unfit to fly, but he had hidden the medical reports.
