New Year’s Night, 2015

On the night of January 1st, 2015, my family and I were getting ready to leave our house to join some friends. We had just stepped out the door when a sudden and violent car crash happened right in front of us.

One of the vehicles lost control and crashed directly into our front gate. In a matter of seconds, our plans were forgotten.

Without hesitation, my parents rushed to the scene. They immediately called emergency services and did everything they

could to help. The accident involved two vehicles. One was driven by a man who, as it turned out, was drunk. The other carried a grandmother and her young grandson.

Tragically, the grandmother didn’t survive the crash. Her grandson, though injured and in shock, made it out alive.

The drunk driver fled the scene before the authorities arrived. Instead of spending that night surrounded by friends and

celebration, we spent it watching flashing lights, paramedics working in the dark, and the police cordoning off the street.
